As a flight attendant I see all kinds of passengers: nonchalant business travelers, excited newlyweds, frazzled families…and every once in a while, I have a passenger who is really, really nervous about flying.

This person might be a first-time or infrequent flyer or simply someone for whom flying is stressful, nerve wracking, and scary.

Flying can be an anxiety-inducing experience for many.

Whether it’s the unfamiliar environment, the lack of control, or the fear of turbulence, nervous flyers often find air travel stressful.

Here are a few tips for nervous flyers – from a flight attendant.

An airplane in the sky seen from the ground. Tips for nervous flyers.

Tips For Nervous Flyers

Before I begin giving my tips for nervous flyers I first want to say that I am, obviously, not a doctor and this is NOT medical advice.

In this article I am not addressing phobia or extreme cases of fear.

If your fear of flying is debilitating then please seek professional help.

Tell the Flight Attendants that Flying Makes You Nervous!

It is perfectly fine for you to let a flight attendant know that you are a nervous passenger!

We will do everything we can to help you feel more comfortable. We are actually trained to give you reassurance and support.

Say Hello to the Captain

Greet the captain or co-captain as you pass by. Look them in the eye. Remember that they are incredibly well-trained, competent, and that they also want to arrive safely.

Educate Yourself about Flying and Remind Yourself of the Facts

Many people find it helpful to remind themselves of just how safe airplane travel actually is!

Taking a look at some statistics before you fly and having a very basic understanding of the mechanics of flying can significantly reduce fear.

Read a Few Helpful Books Before You Go

Here are some books that will not only help you to understand the mechanics of flight but might also help you to deal with your fear of flying.

All three of these are great but I especially enjoyed Cockpit Confidential!

Choose Your Seat Wisely

One of the best tips for nervous flyers is to select the right seat for you! Selecting a seat that makes you feel the most comfortable can make a big difference.

For nervous flyers a seat over or just behind the wings is often a good choice because passengers seated here feel less motion when the plane makes turns.

Some nervous travelers prefer a seat near the window where they have some control over the window shade and can decide whether or not to look out.

For other nervous passengers claustrophobia is an issue and they need to opt for an aisle seat in order to feel less confined.

Pay extra if you must in order to select a seat that makes you feel the most comfortable!

interior of an airplane. You can see a row of seats and there is a sunset outside of the airplane window. One tip for how to prevent airsickness is to look at the horizon, This is a post about tips for nervous flyers

Use Noise Cancelling Headphones

One of the things that makes people the most nervous on an airplane are all the unusual noises. These are normal noises for flight but they aren’t something people are used to hearing in their everyday life.

It can be very helpful to use noise canceling headphones to shut out some of the normal creaks and bumps associated with flying in an airplane.

Bring along a set of good noise canceling headphones for your flight!

Distract Yourself with entertainment

I will say that this current trend of taking long-haul flights without using any devices is typically NOT a good idea for the nervous flyer.

Distraction is your friend!

I would suggest bringing along plenty of entertainment. Bring a great book or download some movies onto your phone or iPad.

There have even been studies done that say that listening to music helps the brain relax so also consider having an in-flight playlist!

You might also be interested in: Tips for Avoiding Airsickness

Arrive at the Airport in Plenty of Time

Arrive in time to get checked in and through the pre-check lanes without having the added stress of worrying about missing your flight! No need to add additional stress to something that you already find stressful.

Also, if you have a layover it will be helpful to budget enough time between flights.

Get Global Entry or TSA pre-check

To go along with the tip above, it would probably be helpful for nervous flyers to get either Global Entry or TSA Pre-check.

This will almost always get you through lines more easily and with less stress.

Bring Comfort Items on the Flight

Bringing personal items that provide you comfort can help ease anxiety.

A neck pillow, blanket, photo of loved ones, or any small item that might provide a sense of familiarity and comfort.

Stay Hydrated and Avoid Caffeine (and DON’T drink too much alcohol)

Dehydration and caffeine can exacerbate anxiety. Drink plenty of water before and during the flight to stay hydrated. Avoid caffeinated beverages, which can increase jitteriness and anxiety.

I’m not going to tell you that having an alcoholic drink doesn’t help at all. For some people it does. However, too much alcohol almost always makes things worse.

Believe me, as a flight attendant I have seen the way too much alcohol can have unintended consequences!

a hand holding a drink in front of an airplane window

Look Into Deep-Breathing, Meditation, and Visualization

Deep breathing can help calm your nerves. Research and implement some deep breathing exercises before you fly and practice them on the plane. This can help reduce anxiety and keep you relaxed.

There are some meditation apps that some people find helpful in calming their nerves while flying.

Visualization techniques can be powerful in reducing anxiety. Imagine yourself arriving safely at your destination and enjoying your trip. Visualizing positive outcomes can shift your focus away from fear.

Keep Your Seat Belt Fastened

Turbulence is one of the things that nervous flyers fear most. The truth is that airplanes are built to withstand turbulence the way cars withstand potholes.

The airplane itself is not in danger from turbulence and you do not have to fear that turbulence is a danger to the plane itself.

However turbulence can jostle passengers and their belongings. It is always a good idea to keep your seat belt fastened when you are seated even if the seat belt sign is off.

Knowing that they are buckled in may make a nervous flyer feel more secure.

Travel with a supportive friend or partner

The key word here is SUPPORTIVE.

I once watched a husband berate his wife for her fear on a turbulent flight. Not helpful.

However, air travel with someone who cares and can help you to work through your fears.

Consider Professional Help

If your fear of flying is severe, seeking professional help can be very beneficial.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy has been shown to be effective in treating phobias, including the fear of flying. You can also look into hypnotherapy, counseling, and support groups.

Overcoming the fear of flying is a journey, and it’s important to be patient with yourself. However, implementing these tips for nervous flyers can help make your flying experience more manageable and even enjoyable.

Safe travels!

Feel free to share your own tips for easing flight anxiety and thanks for stopping by!

On a recent visit to Caye Caulker, a tiny island off the coast of Belize, my husband and I stayed at Colinda Cabanas. I had done my research and had discovered that this place was very highly ranked on all the travel websites…but as you know…that doesn’t always mean anything!

It is always best to get a personal reference, so…I won’t keep you wondering…we loved our stay here and highly recommend it! The top-rated rankings are for good reason!

Here is our review of Colinda Cabanas and all the reasons we found it to be a great place to stay.

The grounds at Colinda Cabanas on Caye Caulker, Belize. There are many palm trees and a sand walkway between the buildings. The small structures are on stilts above the ground and are painted a bright yellow and blue. The post is a review of Colinda Cabanas.

Why We Loved Colinda Cabanas

(Some of the links below may be affiliate links. If you book through my link I may earn a small commission at no extra charge to you.)

There were so many reasons to love Colinda Cabanas and here are a few of them!

A tunnel of palm trees between a series of tropical yellow and blue buildings on stilts that look out onto the ocean and a papapa in the distance. Review of Colinda Cabanas.

Location of Colinda Cabanas

One of the things that we really enjoyed about Colinda Cabanas was the location. It is right on the ocean on the quiet southern end of the island.

We found it to be the perfect balance between seclusion and accessibility.

A short bike ride will take you to the island’s vibrant center, where you can explore local shops, restaurants, and bars but when you are at the property you will only hear the breeze in the trees.

If you are wanting to be in the party area of town…then, this might not be the place for you.

However, we were looking for peace and quiet and relaxation and we found the location to be perfection!

small tropical buildings on stilts surrounded by palm trees. The buildings are a bright yellow and blue. This is Colinda Cabanas.

The Accommodations

There are 14 suites and cabins on the property which are a delightful mix of rustic charm and modern comfort.

They are all nestled beautifully on the property in the shade of the palm trees with enough space between them for a bit of privacy.

Each unit is features bright, tropical colors that enhance the island vibe.

I loved the bright blue and yellow paint on the exterior! The rooms are immaculately clean, well-ventilated, and equipped with all the essentials for a comfortable stay.

Starting on the oceanfront there are 4 beachfront suites with direct ocean views. These are in two buildings with an upper and lower suite.

blue and yellow buildings in the distance with palm trees all around. There are wooden lounge chairs with bright blue cushions on white sand in the foreground.

Behind those are the ocean view rooms. This is where we stayed! We were on the upper level and could see the ocean from our balcony with the view partially blocked by the cabanas in front of us.

This photo shows the view from the little table where we would have our morning coffee!

View of the ocean between two bright blue buildings with yellow trim.

All of the rooms mentioned above have a full kitchen as well as a bathroom and bedroom. It is important to be aware that the beachfront and ocean view suites have air-conditioning in the bedroom ONLY.

Further back on the property sit the garden rooms. These do not have kitchens or ocean views but they do have air-conditioning.

The Caribbean Cabanas are also very charming but be aware that these do not have air-conditioning. They do, however, have ceiling fans and screened windows.

Our room was so pleasant, clean, and comfortable. It was very hot during our visit so I really appreciated the a/c in the bedroom!

We were also provided a big jug of filtered water which was SO nice to have as we were told not to drink the regular tap water on Caye Caulker.

The kitchen also had a coffee maker, a nice refrigerator which was perfect for keeping some cold drinks and was well stocked with plates, cups, utensils, and cookware.

The balconies, including ours, all had hammocks, and we also had a little table with two chairs.

Sitting outside with our coffee watching the sunrise was a gorgeous way to start the day.

Two blue chairs with a table in between on a balcony. The chairs are blue and the building is bright yellow with a bright blue painted railing.

Amenities

Bikes

Colinda Cabanas provides bikes for their guests which was a great perk! We loved riding our bikes everywhere on this car-free island.

Two bicycles leaning against a set of wooden stairs. There are palm trees and tropical plants around the bikes. This is a review of Colinda Cabanas Belize.

Kayaks and Snorkling Gear

The cabanas are just steps away from the pristine Caribbean Sea, offering breathtaking sunrise views and easy access to water activities.

Complimentary use of Colinda Cabana’s kayaks make it easy to explore the island by paddling through the calm waters.

Two bright blue Adirondack chairs on a wooden dock looking into the ocean.

Dock with Palapa

The property also features a private dock that stretches out into the ocean beyond the ocean grasses that rim the edge of Caye Caulker. From here you can kayak, swim, snorkel, or simply relax in the sun.

There are hammocks strung under cover of the palapa where we spent a wonderful afternoon reading and relaxing.

The photo is taken on a long dock looking back to the land instead of out to shore. There are side decks off of the dock with tables and chairs for relaxing. In the distance you see the yellow and blue buildings of Colinda Cabanas.

BBQ Area

There is an area for grilling if you are planning to cook some of your own food.

The Grounds

The grounds were one of my very favorite things about Colinda Cabanas! Everything is so lush and shaded and well-maintained. It is just gorgeous. There are also plenty of seating areas which are perfect for a relaxing evening.

Service

We found the hospitality at Colinda Cabanas to be second to none. The hosts and staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive.

They also gave us excellent recommendations for local attractions, dining, and excursions. You can tell that they truly want you to experience the best of Caye Caulker.

Experience

Staying at Colinda Cabanas was a blissful experience that captured the essence of “Go Slow.”

It is the perfect place for a tropical escape where time slows down and the only decision you need to make is which chair to lounge in!

The moon rising over the ocean. It is getting dark. On the right hand side there is a dock with a palapa.

At Colinda Cabanas you can immerse yourself in the tranquil side of Caye Caulker. We absolutely loved it and highly recommend a stay here.

I hope that you enjoyed this review of Colinda Cabanas and found it helpful!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

When our daughter, Lyla, turned one I decided to use an Under the Sea (“Oneder the Sea”) birthday party theme.

Although we used this theme for our little one’s first birthday party this theme could be an Under the Sea party for any age!

There are so many things you can do with decor and food to bring this theme together in a fun, whimsical, and magical way.

A decorated table with food. This post is about ideas for a Oneder the Sea Birthday Party,

Under the Sea/Oneder the Sea Theme First Birthday Party Ideas

Let’s dive into the ocean of ideas that will make your baby’s milestone birthday an unforgettable adventure under the sea! Haha!

Enjoy this inspo for a delightful Under the Sea or “Oneder” the Sea themed birthday party! I hope it inspires a lot of ideas!

Invitations

We sent e-vites for this party. You can see the ones we sent here: Evites for Oneder the Sea birthday theme.

Party Decor:

We went with slightly feminine colors for our daughter’s birthday but this is definitely a gender neutral theme that would work with almost any colors!

(Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means that I might make a small commission if you purchase through my link but there is never any additional charge to you.)

A balloon arch in peaches, greens, pinks, and purples.

BALLOONS: I almost always have balloons as part of the decor for my parties not only because I love them but also because my sister-in-law has a side business making balloon arches. She always helps me bring my visions to life!

We cut out and painted the arches that you see in the photo below from large foam boards and then put together the balloons.

I get my balloons from Amazon. I like to pick out a variety of colors and mix and match the colors and different sizes.

However, you can also pick balloons in all different colors that are already packaged together specifically for balloon arches. I think this package in bright shades of blue and green would be perfect for a Oneder the Sea themed party.

It is also fun to add some shell shaped or fish tail shaped balloons to your arch!

If you are going to be blowing up a bunch of balloons then you MUST have a balloon pump. It’s truly a life saver!

A ballon arch topped with a fish tail balloon.

FRONT ENTRANCE: At the front door I asked people to write a note to Lyla that would be given to her when she was 18! That was so fun and I have them put away for her and can’t wait to see them again.

PHOTO BOARD: We also did a photo board of Lyla’s first year! I covered it with more of the netting and used little clothespins to pin on the photos.

A photo board with photos from a child's first year. The board is covered with fishing type net and seems to be set up for a birthday party.

SIGN: We placed a sign next to the photo board that told all the ways that Lyla had grown in her first year.

A board with everything about a babies first year.

TABLE DECOR: My favorite part of the decor for any party is the table decor!

I turned my dining table sideways against the window to allow more space in the middle of the room and kept it really simple by using pretty gauze runners in the colors of the balloons.

My runners came from Amazon and I actually purchased them a couple of years ago to use for my sister’s engagement party.

I loved them so much that I have been collecting various colors ever since. They come in handy for so many events.

A decorated table in front of a window. There is food on the table. Below the table are balloons. And hanging above the table are lantern style jelly fish. This is for a Oneder the Sea themed birthday party.

HANGING DECOR: Above the table I hung pink lantern jellyfish from the ceiling. They looked so cute fluttering above the table!

If you aren’t wanting to use pink these also come in shades of blue and green!

lantern style jellyfish in pink hanging above a table.

DRINK AND DESSERT STATION: I put the drinks and desserts on the bar of my kitchen.

That area was decorated with fish type netting and more scattered seashells. I also used this large shell that we stuffed with even more balloons! I bought mine from Amazon and unfortunately can’t find it anymore but here is a fish tail that would be fun as well as an adorable number one!

I also scattered some real shells on the table and on the kitchen island that I have collected over the years from multiple visits to Florida.

Large shell cutout stuffed with different shades of blue balloons on a kitchen island.

PLATES AND NAPKINS: We used simple but pretty paper plates for the main course and some shell shaped plates for dessert.

Scalloped paper party plates.

I also used these cute “shellabration” napkins. Mine came from Dollar Tree but here are some other cute napkins from Amazon.

Napkins that say Let's Shellebrate. This are part of the decor for a Oneder the Sea Birthday Party.

I used these pink and green hobnail glasses with the straws for the adults. I had originally purchased these for another event that I hosted but have used them again and again.

I used paper straws for the adult beverages but look how cute these ocean themed straws would be if you were serving children’s drinks with a straw!

Pink and green hobnail glasses set up for a party.

For the kids I found these cute little plastic shell cups with straws at Dollar Tree. I was hoping that this would help with spills! Here are some cute ones from Amazon.

Shell shaped plastic cups.

Some cute little shell string lights added some interest in this area.

I served pineapple punch from a shell shaped punch bowl.

OTHER ONEDER THE SEA DECOR: I found some more decor ideas that I think would work great for this theme!

Under the Sea / Oneder the Sea Party Food:

It was so much fun setting up the food for this party! We honestly kept it very simple but it was delicious.

For the main course I made these adorable chicken salad croissant sandwiches. A toothpick and some googly eyes made them look like little crabs.

Closeup of croissant sandwiches with chicken salad. There are toothpicks with google eyes on top that make the sandwiches look like little crabs.

We also had a huge charcuterie board with bread, meats, nuts, cheeses, veggies, sauces, and dips as well as a watermelon fruit bowl.

Gorgeous charcuterie board shot from above.

SERVING PIECES THAT I OFTEN USE FOR PARTIES:

  • One of my favorite party dishes is the tiered tray that you can see in some of the photos above. I use it almost every time we have guests and I love it. Highly recommend.
  • We also use a wooden serving tray with a small lip that you can see in the photo of the croissant sandwiches all the time. I used it for serving at this party but it is great to for charcuteries boards as well.
  • In my opinion you can never have too many white serving bowls both for everyday use and for parties. I had several on our food table with things like chips and goldfish. This tiered stand with bowls would be really great for serving!
  • I love using apothecary type jars for parties. When they are filled they make everything look so pretty. You can see that I had them above filled with Swedish fish, sea blue rock candy, and other little treats.
Cut out of a shell sitting on a kitchen island filled with balloons.

I did have a smash cake just for fun for Lyla but other than that we didn’t have cake at this party.

Parent with a child eating their birthday cake at a Oneder the Sea Birthday Party theme

For the main dessert we had a local ice cream truck come by! That was so much fun and it encouraged guests to hang out on the front porch rather than everyone being inside the house.

Photo of an ice cream food truck.

Because I am always extra I also had a local bakery make some of the cutest macarons I have ever seen. Not only were adorable, they were also delicious!

Adorable crab macarons.

Party Favors and Games:

For a party favor we decided to do something really practical and let all the kids take home a beach towel. I think the parent appreciated not having to deal with bags of candy and toys!

I found them in a pack of 6 in different colors!

Ideas for a party favor for an Oneder the Sea birthday party is beach towels.

I hope that this will help you come up with your own Onder the Sea birthday party ideas!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

My husband and I were married in Ouray, Colorado and it is one of our favorite places in the world. We especially love to visit Ouray in the summer.

Here is a list of great things to do in Ouray in the summer…and of course many of the things on this list can also be done in the winter!

Things To Do in Ouray, Colorado in the Summer!

Ouray is sometimes called the Switzerland of America. It is located in a canyon surrounded by the San Juan Mountains and is absolutely gorgeous.

It is a mecca for adventure lovers and thrill seekers as well as a place for people who want to experience the natural beauty and wildlife of the mountains.

The town is situated at 8,000 feet in the western part of Colorado.

It is far from the crowds of Denver and has a population of only 1,000 people yet is still a tourist destination because of all the natural beauty and because there are so many great things to do in Ouray, Colorado!

Although there are plenty of winter activities this post is going to focus on things to do in the in Ouray in the summer.

Hiking

One of the best things to do in Ouray is go hiking! Here are some of the hiking trails in the area.

Box Canyon Falls Park

First of all you are going to want to visit Box Canyon Falls Park where there are three hikes.

You can see the sign for these falls high on a mountain above Ouray. A short drive will take you to the park. This is a developed attraction and you have to pay to see the falls. The cost to enter is $5 per adult.

There are three main trails in the park:

  • Falls Trail: This is a must see when you are in Ouray. This is an easy 500 foot walk into the canyon. You will be walking over a grate part of the time which allows you to see way down into the canyon, but the walkway is steady and there are rails so you will feel secure. At the end there is a tremendous waterfall spilling through a narrow opening in the canyon. In the spring when the snow begins to melt the water flow is so fierce that the entire canyon is full of mist. Look around and notice some of the mining equipment that was left behind when operations ceased. Also, this area has been designated an important bird area by the National Audobon Society because it is home to Black Swifts. They migrate through the canyon and are usually there from early June through September.
  • High Bridge Trail: A half mile loop that gains 200 feet in elevation. You will walk up a set of stairs to get here and it is totally worth the fairly easy climb for the views of the mountains, the waterfall from a different angle, and the city below.
  • Native Plant Loop: This is just a quick stroll through nature with plant markers for the local flora. This is only trail without steps. It will lead you back to the entrance and the parking area.

Bear Creek National Recreation Trail to Grizzly Bear Mine

You will see the signs for the Bear Creek Trailhead only a couple of miles south of Ouray along Highway 550 which is also called the Million Dollar Highway. The trail is an out and back and is considered to be moderate/strenuous.

Honestly when you have just arrived in Colorado from barely above sea level…everything feels strenuous!

The beginning is the hardest part with quite an incline and lots of switchbacks. You gain 1,000 feet in the first mile!

After that you go through a section of ledge paths. A rock wall will go up on one side of you and a steep drop off on the other. This might not be a trail for someone with a fear of heights! I would suggest using trekking poles for stability.

I believe that the trail actually continues but we always turn back at the remains of Grizzly Bear Mine which is where we turned around to return. This is about a 4.5 mile hike round trip.

Cascade Falls Park

This can’t really be called a hike. It is actually just a short walk from the parking lot to the falls, but it is definitely worth a stop when you are in Ouray.

Ouray Perimeter Trail

This is a unique trail that circles the town of Ouray.

You can start this loop at a variety of points but most people begin at the Ouray Visitors Center. There is parking for the trail head behind the center.

Locals recommend hiking this loop in a clockwise direction. It climbs sharply up at the beginning giving you nice views of the town.

Once again there are some steep drop-offs on this trail so if you don’t like heights be aware! Overall I would say this is easier than most trails in the area, but there are some steep areas and some loose gravel. You will pass both Cascade Falls and Box Canyon Falls as well as some bridges, a tunnel, and a creek.

One very popular feature of the Perimeter Trail is that it you are never more than 500 feet vertically or 1⁄2 mile horizontally from Ouray’s City limits. As a result, there are several locations along its route where one can leave the trail and return to town without having to hike its entire length.

Adventures in and Around Ouray, Colorado

So many of the fun things to do in Ouray, Colorado in the summer are adventurous activites!

Go Off-Road!

Ouray is known for its world renowned off road trails. OHV stand for off highway vehicle and an OHV Route is either a dirt road or trail that has been designated as legal and appropriate for off-highway use by motorized vehicles.

We like to rent Polaris RZR’s (pronounced razor) from Colorado West Jeeps for a day up in the mountains on the Alpine Loop Trail.

These are also known as UTV or Utility Terrain Vehicle, but we heard most of the locals just calling them Razors!

Colorado West Jeeps dropped our Razors off at Ironton where we parked our vehicle and headed up the trail into the mountains in our UTV.

If you are brave enough to drive up these steep and, not going to lie, scary trails, you will encounter stunning views of the San Juan mountains, deep blue high mountain lakes, and mountain passes that are well above 12,000 feet.

You will also see the skeletons of old mining towns and mills that once promised great hope and prosperity, as well as gorgeous valleys with flowing streams surrounded by wildflowers.

It is absolutely stunning!

Oh, there are also heart stopping drop offs and switchbacks. Y’all, I’m not gonna lie. I was scared at times. This particular adventure is probably not for a person who hates heights.

NOTE: If you do this be prepared for weather changes. It was very warm in Ouray, but quite cool up in the mountains at the higher elevations.

Guided Jeep Tours in Ouray

If you are not comfortable driving yourself up into the mountains there are also guided jeep tours.

These are both group and private tours where you will have a driver who is familiar with the mountain trails and how to navigate them.

Check out Alpine Scenic 4×4 Tours or there is also the Switzerland of America Private jeep safari.

Mountain Biking

If you are into mountain biking you will want to check out the RAT or the Ridgeway Area Trail system.

Since 2004, the Ridgway Area Trails (RAT) group has work in collaboration with the US Forest Service, BLM, Ridgway State Park, and public parks to develop a multi-use trail system.

Check out this website to learn more about the wide variety of trails, both easy and hard, and to download a map.

Fishing

There are some amazing streams around Ouray with places to fly fish, spin cast, and even bait fish.

You can hire a guide with Rigs to help you learn to fly fish and take you to the best spots if this isn’t something you have tried before.

Some of the best fishing spots require a hike to get to and some places are catch and release only so be sure and check the local fishing shop to receive the most up to date information on conditions, locations, licenses and supplies.

White Water Rafting

Check out Mild to Wild rafting for some white river rafting opportunities near Ouray!

SUP – Stand Up Paddleboarding

We learned to love stand up paddle boarding when we were at the 30A beaches in the Florida Panhandle.

The best place to paddle board in Ouray is just outside of town at the Ridgeway State Park Reservoir. The reservoir is lovely and large enough to get away from the crowds. It is 5 miles long with 1,030 surface-acres of water.

This is a beautiful place with clear water and great mountain views. If you are feeling really brave you could strap a paddle board to a jeep and go up to Lake Como just past Hurricane Pass way up in the mountains to do some stand up paddleboarding high in the mountains.

Canyoning

Interested in a crazy adventure? Give canyoning a try. Canyoning, also known as canyoneering, involves This involved rappelling or navigating into a canyon, alongside a waterfall or fast moving stream!

Sound like fun? Check out Canyoning Colorado to start your adventure!

You might be interested in learning about great places to stay in Ouray! And I know that it was a little indulgent but I also have written about our elopement in the mountains around Ouray.

This may be the most famous highway in the US and it is one of the best things to do around Ouray, Colorado in the summer.

The Million Dollar Highway is a canyon clinging stretch of road that is the scariest drive I’ve ever been on.

Ever.

We don’t have mountains like this in Arkansas and we tend to believe in guardrails. There is not a guardrail to be found on this highway which, honestly, seems a little reckless, although I will admit it makes for gorgeous views.

Somehow driving this road felt more frightening to me than the switchbacks and drop offs in the UTV the previous day!

There are a couple of stories about how the Million Dollar Highway was named.

It was either because it cost so much to build or due to the amount of gold ore that remained in the roadway’s fill.

This stretch of Highway is about 25 miles long, but the twelve miles (19 km) south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the summit of Red Mountain Pass is the most terrifying.

Besides the aforementioned lack of guardrails it is characterized by steep cliffs, sheer dropoffs, narrow traffic lanes, and a number of hairpin “S” curves.

If you are super scared of heights but still want to experience the highway you might want to drive the Million Dollar Highway from the old mining town of Silverton back to Ouray so that you will be on the inside of the road more of the time.

Tip: This road can be especially treacherous during rain so you might want to check the weather before you go especially if you aren’t used to driving on roads like these.

The San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway

The Million Dollar Highway is just one part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway.

The entire Scenic Byway is 236 miles and passes through the old mining towns of Ouray, Telluride, Cortez, Durango, and Silverton.

You will drive through gorgeous scenery and be in the shadow of some of Colorado’s impressive 14,000 foot peaks.

Things To Do In Town

There is plenty to do right in the town of Ouray. The waterfalls I mentioned above as well as the Perimeter Trail are basically right in the town. Here are some additional fun things to do in Ouray, Colorado in the summer!

Enjoy Ouray!

Just walk up and down the streets of the town popping into eclectic shops and delicious restaurants as you go! It is a quaint, friendly, and lovely small town with a lot of Old West history as well as new west energy!

Visit the Hot Springs Park and Pools

A soak in hot mineral waters is a perfect way to unwind after a day of adventuring in Ouray! A visit to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool is a must when you are in Ouray.

The pool is very developed and well maintained for guests. There are five separate geo-thermally heated pools and of course, the entire facility is surrounded by towering mountain peaks.

It is also a great place to bring a family as there are waterslides and activities for the kids.

If you are a newlywed or a couple without children there are also adults only soaking sections. There is a nice division between the playing and working out and soaking areas.

The various pools also range in temperature so you can choose how hot you want your soak to be.

The pools are popular with both locals and visitors. One of the best things about these hot springs is that they are free from the sulfur smell that so often accompanies natural hot springs.

Take the Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour

During the late 19th century, the Bachelor Syracuse Mine was one of the most prolific producers of gold in the area.

Today you can visit and experience a real mine and even pan for gold. I think that this would be such a fun things to do with kids! T

he Bachelor Syracuse Mine is just outside of Ouray and they also have a cafe that serves breakfast so ask about that when you schedule your tour.

Check out the Historic Western Hotel

Even if you aren’t staying here you might want to stop in and check out this authentic hotel that was built in the 1890’s and served as a hotel and saloon for visitors to the western Rocky Mountains.

This was a hangout for prospectors and adventurers as well as where the stagecoach used to stop.

The three-story white building features twelve classic rooms and two suites with rustic decor, original molding, carved ceilings, leaded windows with stained glass, and other historical features.

Stop in to the Ouray County Museum

At the Ouray County Museum is housed in a building that was built in 1886 and was originally the St. Joseph’s Miners’ Hospital.

You can learn all about the history of Ouray here through exhibits about life on the local ranches, mining, and the railroads. There are also artifacts from original settlers and Native American tribes who once lived in the area.

This is a small museum but well worth a stop.

The Smithsonian Institution calls it one of the best little museums in the West and Arthur Frommer’s Idiots Guide to the Rockies says: “If you visit one county museum in Colorado make it the Ouray Museum.”

Ouray Alchemist Museum

Such an interesting place!

After checking out the shop in the front of the Ouray Alchemist Museum you can take a guided tour back in time to experience pharmacy in the Wild West.

This is a fun collection of items that are almost all locally sourced. Over 40 years of collecting has produced this outstanding re-creation of a frontier pharmacy, including the oldest prescription in Colorado.

Mouse’s Chocolate and Coffee

If you notice a line of happy people along Main street in Ouray you are probably at Mouse’s!

Beautiful and delectable chocolate truffles, icecream, coffee drinks, cookies and pastries. Everything is home made and delicious.

Try the scrap cookies, made with scraps from all the candies! Their chai’s, including chai ice cream are also delightful.

More Things To Do Around Ouray, Colorado

There are so many things to do just outside or not too far from Ouray!

Go To Yankee Boy Basin

You have got to go to Yankee Boy Basin while you are in Ouray! I particularly love it because it is where we had out elopement.

The drive to Yankee Boy Basin is another off road trail so you will need a jeep or some type of all-terrain vehicle.

Yankee Boy Basin is very popular with photographers in the summer not only because of the gorgeous scenery and the wildflowers. Flowers were abundant while we were there in July.

The road is just over 18 miles and is rated as moderate.

ouray colorado mountain elopemen

Visit the Animas Forks Ghost Town

There are many deserted old mining towns in the mountains around Ouray. Animas Forks is one of the best!

We visited via the back trails on our UTVs but you can get there by a county road in a jeep. We even saw a few regular passenger cars coming down this road!

Established in 1875 at 11,180 feet elevation, residents once boasted that Animas Forks was the largest city in the world…at this altitude. It was fun to see the houses and imagine what it must have been like to live here.

Visit The Old Mining Town of Silverton

Silverton is a great small town to visit because it has maintained so much of it’s historical old West feeling.

Wander the streets and pop into the various stores. We had a coffee at Coffee Bear. Then we ate lunch at Handlebar’s Food and Saloon. I highly recommend both of these places!

I can’t tell you how much I enjoy Ouray, Colorado! Of course, it holds fond memories for us because we were married there…but in addition to that there are just so many fun things to do in Ouray, Colorado in the summer.

I’m already looking forward to going back next year!

Thanks for stopping by!

We love it when you pin!

Riding UTVs in the mountains of Colorado is exhilarating...and a little scary! There are so many fun and exciting things to do in Ouray, Colorado!

Wondering what to wear in San Francisco?

San Francisco was my first home base as a new flight attendant. There were lots of things that surprised me about San Francisco when I moved there.

It was more beautiful than I had imagined. It was more expensive than I had imagined. And most of all, it was WAY colder than I had imagined.

The weather is something that you will want to keep in mind as you prepare your packing list for San Francisco.

Here are some things that you will want to pack for your trip to San Francisco.

Young woman sitting in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. She has dark hair, her glasses are on her head. Ideas for what to wear in San Francisco

Prepare for San Francisco Weather

Let’s talk about the weather in San Francisco! Mostly…it’s on the cooler side, but not always!

Of course you will always want to check the forecast before you travel.

Here is what you can “generally” expect in San Francisco.

By the way, the climate in San Francisco does not show a lot of variation throughout the year. The main differences you will encounter are the amount of rain and fog versus the amount of sunshine.

  • May – July: Are you aware that the average temperatures in JULY in San Francisco are the same as the average temperatures in DECEMBER in San Francisco. Summers in San Francisco are COOL. The average high in July in the city is 57 and the average low is 46. Be prepared for cool and foggy and occasionally rainy weather.
  • August – October: In my opinion fall is the BEST time of year to visit San Francisco. The weather warms up a bit and the sun is usually shining with less fog. There is not much rain especially in September and October, although it can pick up a bit in November
  • November – January: Honestly, these months are very similar to the summer months. It can be a definitely be a little chilly but it is very rarely truly cold. You can expect some rainy days in the winter as well.
  • March – May: It does warm up a little in the spring and becomes much sunnier with less rain and fog. Spring is also a great time to visit.

What is the San Francisco Style?

So what do people wear in San Francisco? What is the general “style?”

  • San Francisco is trendy but casual. Even the business people or tech workers might be wearing jeans and T-shirts, sweaters and sneakers.
  • Colors are muted. People wear a lot of black and grey and neutrals and not a lot of bright color.
  • People rarely wear shorts. It is almost never warm enough to be in shorts for an entire day.
  • Jeans are ubiquitous, especially smart, trendy denim.
  • Lots and lots of jackets or sweaters. Almost everyone will be carrying a jacket or a lightweight sweater even on a warmer day.
  • Shoes with closed toes. There are two reasons for this: First, hills. Don’t forget that San Francisco is incredibly hilly and you won’t want to be walking those hills in flip flops or sandals. Second, the streets in certain parts of San Francisco (yes, even the touristy sections) are really dirty.
  • Dresses are fine but I would suggest either wearing leggings under your dress or bringing a pair of leggings just in case. Why? First, because of the wind can pick up at any time and second, because the weather can change on a dime and leave you shivering.

Packing List For San Francisco

It’s all About the Layers

Layers are key when packing for this gorgeous city!

One thing that you might not know is that the weather is not only changeable from day to day in the city, but can also be different from place to place within the city ON THE SAME DAY.

You might find it cold and very windy at a Golden Gate Bridge viewing point and much, much warmer in the Mission District.

Layers are something that you will need to think through a little more than normal as you pack for a trip to San Francisco.

As you put together your outfits always ask yourself questions like: Do I have a jacket I can throw on if it suddenly gets cold and windy. What can I wear if the fog rolls in? Will I still like this outfit if it gets hot and I have to take the jacket off?

You should definitely bring a jacket or a windbreaker.

Sports and Puffer Jackets

You will see people wearing a lot of sports type jackets in San Francisco.

North Face is very popular brand there, but I wouldn’t go with anything too heavy. This North Face triclimate jacket is a good option because you can wear the layers individually depending on the temperature.

I have this North Face hooded rain jacket and it is also a great choice.

If you don’t want to spend North Face prices take a look at this great little puffer jacket!

Rain Jackets

This Columbia rain jacket is inexpensive and when combined with a sweater on a cool day will be all that you need for the San Francisco weather.

It comes in tons of colors including the typical black or grey that you will see most often in the city. It can double as either a rain jacket and a windbreaker.

Cardigans

Of course a cardigan is a perfect layering piece!

I adore this oversized cardi with the stripes on the arms! So cute! But you could also just go with something more basic like this waffle knit cardigan with pockets.

More Jackets

I love a great denim jacket. It might be my favorite layering piece of all. I prefer them a bit oversized like the one in the link.

Active Wear

There is a lot of walking and hiking and biking in San Francisco.

Be sure and bring some active wear. This two-piece set is super cute.

I like these joggers which are a bit of a Vuori dupe.

A Great Pair of Comfortable Shoes

One of the most important things to wear in San Francisco is a pair of comfortable shoes! You will be walking a lot and up and down some VERY steep hills.

I would suggest a great pair of sneakers. I adore my Hokas. I know that they aren’t the prettiest show in the world but they are SO comfortable.

These SeaVees are great, this is a brand I really like.

You might also opt for a cute pair of flat boots like this Ugg Ankle Boot which is both cute and comfy!

Jeans

There would be almost no place in San Francisco where jeans would not be acceptable.

Jeans are basically the queen of most wardrobes in the city. In fact, did you know Levis is a San Francisco company?

You could always pack a pair of Levi’s 505 straight jeans. A great basic!

Or any other trendy jean that you have in your wardrobe.

Travel Umbrella

Because of the unpredictability of the weather it is always a good idea to bring a nice travel umbrella with you when sightseeing in San Francisco.

Day Pack

A day pack is a good choice for carrying your stuff around San Francisco.

It can hold your water bottle, your umbrella, and your extra layers. Plus it makes it easier to navigate the hills because it leaves your hands free.

My favorite is this Osprey Ultralight.

Tote Bag

Did you know that San Francisco was the first city to outlaw single use plastic bags? If you are going to be doing any shopping while you are in town you might want to bring your own tote bag!

Water Bottle

You will definitely want to stay hydrated even though the weather may not be hot!

Plan to carry a water bottle with you for sightseeing and outdoor activities! You can carry one like the Takeya.

General Packing Tips For ANY Destination

Here are a few packing tips for ANY destination!

Always, Always Check the Weather Before You Leave

Always check the weather forecast the day before you go on a trip. This will give you time to add or remove a jacket, throw in an umbrella, or completely redo what you had planned to bring.

I’ll never forget FREEZING in Florence Italy in June because I had forgotten to check the weather and had packed nothing for cold weather.

Are You Packing Light or Bringing Whatever You Want?

Decide whether or not you are going light before you start packing.

Some of this may depend on how far you are going and whether or not you are flying or road-tripping.

Honestly, If we are taking a road trip I pretty much bring whatever I want. When I’m flying I pack much lighter.

What About Luggage?

Do you want something on wheels or do you want to carry your luggage on your back?

I’m a wheels person myself!

I have and love the Away Bag Bigger Carry On but it is a little pricy!

If you are looking for a carry on that is high quality but a little less expensive check out the Amazon Basics Carry On. It is under $100 and gets great reviews!

Roll or Fold?

Almost every packing guru will tell you that you need to roll your clothing rather than fold them. Y’all, I just can’t do it! I’m a folder not a roller.

However, I do LOVE using packing cubes and definitely recommend them. These are my favorite packing cubes.

You can divide items up anyway you like: by outfits, or tops in one and bottoms in another…pajamas, swimwear, etc.

I personally like to set up outfits, but do whatever works for you!

If you are really trying to squeeze a lot into a small suitcase you can use these Compression Cubes by Eagle Creek!

A Few More Basic Packing Tips

  • Put the heaviest items towards the wheels of a rolling bag or in the bottom of your backpack. This will make a rolling bag more stable and not as likely to fall over and it will make your backpack more comfortable.
  • Choose travel friendly fabrics (meaning things that don’t wrinkle) You don’t want to spend your vacation ironing do you? However, if you do bring something that wrinkles consider using this travel steamer instead of an iron.
  • Pack by outfit! This way you won’t bring individual items that you don’t actually need and won’t wear.
  • Lay things out before you put them in your bag. This enables you to see what you don’t really need or what you might be missing!

I hope that this helps you to know what to wear in San Francisco and what to pack for your San Francisco vacation!

Have a great time visiting this fascinating city.

I have to admit that one advantage to being furloughed as a flight attendant was getting to spend more time with my new husband! At the time of the pandemic we were newlyweds and came up with a lot of fun date night at home ideas!

Now that the world is back to normal we are parents of a beautiful little girl who is now a very busy toddler!

My husband has started a new job, I am both working in social media and going back to my job as a flight attendant after my maternity leave. And although we do occasionally get a babysitter and go out on a date night, sometimes it’s just nicer, and definitely more cost effective, to stay home!

Here are a few of our great date night at home ideas!

Date Night at Home Ideas

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. There is never any additional cost to you.

Make Homemade Pizzas Together

Get together all your favorite ingredients: pepperoni, prosciutto, mozzarella, arugula. Pour yourselves a glass of wine. Turn on your favorite Italian music, and just enjoy being in the moment together!

Cook in this heart shaped pizza pan to add a little more pizzazz!

make a heart shaped pizza for a special date night at home

Take an Online Dancing Class

How fun would this be? You can find a bunch of free classes on YouTube or there are some good ones that you can pay for. My husband and I have not been blessed with the gift of dance, so we can honestly use all the help we can get!

This is a perfect way to connect and do something outside of the norm. Get dressed up, have fun with it, and don’t take yourself too seriously!

Game Night

Competition is always welcome in our household! We love games and find them to be a great way to have fun while competing.

Obviously, there are some couples who might be a little TOO competitive for this to be a fun activity, but we enjoy it.

One of our favorite games is Sushi Go. We normally play this with the family when we gather for the holidays, but 2 people can play it as well. Exploding Kittens is a new game that we’ve been liking recently.

Jenga is fun for two. If you are word-type people you can always play Scrabble.

There are also lots of card games for two people, one of our favorites being the fast paced game of Dutch Blitz. The problem with Dutch Blitz is that I ALWAYS win. Haha.

Travel Inspired Themed Night

You can travel in your imagination!

Plan a date night with food, decor, and a movie all based around a place that you’d love to go. Dreaming of Paris? Open a bottle of French wine, put on some French music, cook a Parisian stye dinner together, then end the evening with a movie set in Paris!

Paint Together with a Paint by Numbers Kit

Pick out an adult paint by numbers kit and paint together at home for a fun and creative at home date night.

If you haven’t looked at a paint by numbers kit lately you might be surprised at how lovely some of them are. You might create a new masterpiece to hang on your walls!

Learn About and Discuss Your Love Languages

Do you know your partner’s love languages? A great at home date night activity is to learn about and discuss what makes each of you feel loved and cared for.

You can read the love language book, but there is also a love language card game that could be fun for a date night as it give conversation starters for couples.

Sleep in a Fort

I LOVED building forts when I was little. Even though we are adults Daniel and I still like to act like children every once in a while.

Build a fort in your living room, add a grown up touch with wine and a charcuterie board and snuggle in the fort together with a bunch of blankets and pillows.

Y’all this barefoot dreams blanket is the best thing ever! It is a little pricy, but it is big enough for two to snuggle under and is incredibly soft and cozy!

Plan a Dream Vacation Together

Where do you want to go? What do you want to do when you get there? Where would be a great place to stay.

Spend a date night at home reading travel books, scouring blog posts, and watching You Tube videos to plan the perfect dream vacation together.

We have a great checklist that you can use when planning a trip to Europe.

A great way to connect with your partner is to plan a perfect trip together

At Home Spa Date

It would be so fun to do a facial mask together or try a steam treatment! While your mask is setting you can also soak your feet in warm water followed by a foot scrub and then give each other foot massages.

A stay at home spa night is a perfect way to relax and reconnect.

Play Video Games

Completely relax and let your hair down by spending an evening playing some of your favorite video games! Relive your childhood by playing Mario Kart.

Overcooked is a challenging and silly game that will make you work together to pass some of the levels.

If you want a little exercise you can play the music video game Just Dance.

Write or Record Your Love Story

Write down or make a video of your love story together. Share how you met and when you each knew that you were in love.

Express how your love has grown during the time you’ve been together and what your hopes and dreams are for your future.

This could even be something that you do yearly on a special anniversary.

Have a Movie Night Featuring Your Favorite Childhood Movies

Want to keep it simple?

Nothing is easier for a date night at home than a movie night. To make it even more fun you can watch each others favorite childhood movies and serve your favorite childhood snacks.

Have a Fondue Night

There is something about fondue that is just romantic. Start with a cheese fondue and dip in bread and vegetables. Finish the evening with a chocolate fondue with strawberries and bananas and pound cake for dipping.

We have this electric fondue pot that we received as a wedding gift and we really like it. You might prefer a more traditional fondue pot that uses a flame for heat.

Work a Puzzle

Spread a puzzle out on the dining table and work it together while you chat and laugh.

You could probably finish a 500 piece puzzle in one evening or choose a bigger puzzle to keep working for several nights.

working a jigsaw puzzle is a great thing to do for a stay at home date night

Play a Couples Card Game

I’ve already mentioned the love languages card game.

Some other couples card games that you might want to try for a date night at home are The Ultimate Game for Couples or the game Talk, Flirt, Dare.

Make a Bucket List of Things You Want to do Together

Spend an evening dreaming of your future and making a list of everything that you hope to accomplish and experience as a couple. From attending the Kentucky Derby to kissing on top of the Eiffel Tower to owning a home to getting a dog.

Creating your own personal couples bucket list is one of the most meaningful date night at home ideas.

Learn to roll Sushi

Get your own sushi making kit, pick up some ingredients, and learn to make sushi!

You can learn from a beginners sushi cookbook or take a look on YouTube where you will find bunches of sushi making classes.

Making sushi together is a fun thing for a couple to do together at home

Make Tie Dyed T-Shirts

Want to do something fun and creative on your date night at home? Tie dye shirts together!

You can start with a few T-shirts from the local hobby store and even buy a tie dye kit to use. I’ve read that you can also use food coloring to tie dye, but I confess I’ve never tried this myself.

Write Each Other Love Letters and Read Them to One Another

Take some time to write one another a love letter and then read them aloud. This is such a meaningful activity. You might even want to write them on pretty paper to keep for later.

Take a Cooking Class

In my opinion, there isn’t much that is better than cooking a great meal with your partner.

You can plan a menu together and cook something that neither of you have made before. Or even more fun might be to take an online cooking class and prepare a wonderful meal together while being guided by an online expert.

Sur La Table offers online cooking classes that are some of the most reasonably priced that I have seen!

Stargaze From Your Own Backyard

Get out the lawn chairs and lay back and watch the stars while holding hands with your sweetheart. If it’s cold out grab a couple of electric blankets to use outside!

Ask Each Other the “36 Questions that Lead to Love”

Have you heard of the 36 Questions that Lead to Love? They came from an article in the New York Times and were inspired by the real psychology behind how intimacy forms. The idea is that vulnerability leads to closeness.

These questions are supposed to help two people get to truly know and understand one another so that they can fall in love or…fall deeper in love.

Take turns asking each other the questions and listening closely to the way your partner answers.

Have Breakfast in Bed in the Evening

Make a luxurious breakfast and climb in bed to eat it on footed bamboo trays. Treat yourself to mimosas and pancakes and the works.

Go on a Virtual Tour of a Museum

Many museums now have virtual tours! Pick a museum that you’ve always wanted to visit and take a virtual tour of it together. You can travel from your living room to the Vatican Museums or to the Natural HIstory Museum in London.

Many other museums now have virtual tours so just do a search to find your favorite.

Take Some Personality Tests and Compare Your Results

Do you know your Myer’s Briggs type or your Enneagram? What about your partner’s personality type?

For an interesting date night at home take some of the free personality tests that are easy to find online and then read about your personality types. This will give you great insight to you and your partners personalities and motivations. This is a great way to understand one another better.

Do a DIY project around your home

Have you been wanting to wall paper your guest bathroom? Or paint your bedroom? Make it a date!

Gather the supplies and then work together to get a DIY project done in your home. Play some music and keep it fun. You learn so much about someone when you do a project together and feel such a sense of accomplishment when is is complete.

Make a scrapbook together

This can be an old fashioned scrapbook or one that you do online. Daniel and I have been working on a photo album/scrapbook from our first year of marriage and it is so much fun.

You not only get to be creative and but also get to take a walk down memory lane together.

Hope this list of date night at home ideas has been helpful! Let me know if you try any of them.

Thanks for stopping by!

Planning a trip to the Keys? Wondering what to wear? Here are a few packing tips for the Florida Keys!

I grew up in south Florida and we used to visit the Keys frequently when I was a child. My husband and I recently took a road trip through the Keys so that I could show my him the place where I grew up.

I still love the Keys. It is truly one of my favorite spots in the world. Such a unique and beautiful place!

Here are some ideas for what to wear in the Florida Keys as well as some general packing tips!

What to pack for the Florida Keys? A sun hat! Girl in a red convertible on the beach in the Florida Keys

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. There is never any additional charge to you.

Prepare for South Florida Weather

Let’s talk about the weather in the Florida Keys!

Did you know that the Florida Keys are the closest you can get to the equator while still being in the United States?

It is warm year round. It is also humid so the high temperatures will feel a little hotter.

Fortunately the Keys are surrounded by waters that help to moderate the temperatures a bit and typically there is an ocean breeze. But it will be hot most of the year.

The other thing to know is that there isn’t a great deal of fluctuation between daytime and nighttime temperatures. In other words, it doesn’t cool off a lot at night.

The only major weather related thing you need to concern yourself with in the Keys is hurricane season!

Hurricane Season:

Hurricane season starts June 1 and lasts until Nov. 30. The season peaks in August through early October as surface temperatures in the Atlantic hit their highest temperatures.

I have actually been in the Keys when a hurricane was approaching and evacuations had begun. Let me tell you…evacuating on the small highway that runs through the Keys is not fun.

Keep an eye on the weather if you plan to travel during hurricane season!

January – March:

Highs are in the mid to high 70’s and lows in the mid to high 60’s. These are the months when a cardigan or windbreaker might come in handy.

The skies are typically sunny and it is a great time to explore because it isn’t too hot!

It is also high season in the Florida Keys because everyone wants to enjoy the nice weather.

April – June:

Beautiful and warm!

The highs will be in the mid to high 80’s and the lows in the mid to high 70’s. A gorgeous time to go to the Keys in my opinion.

July – September:

Hot and humid, but less crowded.

High temps are in the 90’s and lows are in the high 70’s to low 80’s. This is where things start to get a little dicey because although hurricane season begins in June it peaks in September.

October – December:

Hurricane season comes to an end in November. The temperatures start to cool a little with highs in the mid-80’s and lows in the mid 70’s. December can be pretty busy with tourists. I love November in the Keys!

Packing Tips for Key West and the Florida Keys

What do People Wear in the Florida Keys? What is the General Style?

You will find that the style in the Keys is very casual! People are definitely not “done up” here.

  • Casual, casual, casual! Tanks, shorts, and flip flops everywhere.
  • Comfortable clothing is favored. You will want to wear breezy dresses when the weather is warm. On the few cool days go with leggings or joggers or even shorts topped with a jacket.
  • Shorts are acceptable almost everywhere!
  • Sandals and flip flops abound and can be worn almost anywhere.
  • It’s fine to throw a cover-up over your swimsuit to go in a store or even many restaurants.
  • Think island wear, easy sundresses, cute coverups, shorts
  • Lots of bathing suits
  • Short sleeves T-shirts and tanks
  • You can definitely wear color in the Florida Keys

What to pack for Key West and the Florida Keys

Bring shorts, beach coverups, bathing suits and dresses! People in the Keys are all about comfort and rarely wear long jeans. You will see a lot of people wearing denim shorts through!

Almost anything goes when it comes to swimsuits in the Florida Keys. From the skimpiest bikini to full coverage swim shorts and tops.

If you are going to snorkel then a little more coverage is always a good idea to protect from the coral.

Swimsuits…

Click on the links to check out these bathing suits.

I love a nice high waist two piece! It is one of my favorite styles. This is a cute one with a ruffley top. It has almost a nautical feeling. Click through to see the different patterns and colors available.

This boy short style swimsuit would be perfect if you are going to be more active! You could wear this to go snorkeling or kayaking. It also comes in a variety of colors!

If you want to go with a true bikini this one in a solid color with the criss-cross back would be a great choice. It gets great reviews and would be easy to wear.

…And More Swimsuits.

Here is a classic retro one piece swimsuit! The ruching is super slimming and it comes in more than 30 colors and patterns!

I love this adorable two piece! The top has a criss-cross shape that will give you quite a bit of coverage and it comes in a bunch of adorable patterns and colors.

Another itsy-bitsy cute bikini! I really like the black color with the white trim. The high cut legs are so cute and flattering.

Swimsuit Cover-ups

You will definitely need to pack a couple of great swim suite coverups on your trip to the Florida Keys. They are perfect for running into a store or a great little restaurant.

shorts and Breezy Dresses

One of the best packing tips for the Florida Keys? Bring shorts and breezy dresses! Here are a few of my favorites:

These original Levis would be cute to wear walking around in Key West. They come in plain blue denim as well as a bunch of other colors and patterns and styles.

You can never go wrong with a great pair of white shorts. I really like the distressing on these!

Here is a cute sleeveless swing dress that comes in a ton of different colors and patterns.

I adore this little spaghetti strap dress in a pretty floral print and a tie at the waist.

Flip Flops

Seriously, some flip flops have got to go in your bag when you are packing for the Florida Keys! You can’t go wrong with a pair of pink Havaianas!

More Miscellaneous Things to Pack For Key West and the Florida Keys

Reef Safe Sunscreen

You are going to want to protect both your skin and the gorgeous reefs in the Florida Keys. The sun in the keys is intense so definitely be prepared for that! This reef repair sunscreen is both all natural and water resistant.

Water Bottle

You will definitely want to stay hydrated in the Florida heat! Plan to carry a water bottle with you for sightseeing and outdoor activities! You can carry one like the Takeya which I really love.

A Sun Hat

In the Florida Keys you will definitely want to wear something on your head to protect you from the sun. I love hats! A cute straw hat is one of the best things to wear in the summer. This straw hat is adorable and is foldable for travel!

Sunscreen Lip Balm

You will also need some sunscreen lip balm for extra protection from the sun. We really like the Banana Boat brand.

Waterproof Phone Case

I like to protect my phone from the sand and salt water with this waterproof phone case.

Underwater Camera

Ok, I can’t claim that an underwater camera is an essential item to back for the Florida Keys…but it sure would be fun! You will probably be spending some time looking at the beautiful reefs under the water.

The Olympus Tough TG-6 is one of the top rated and the gopros are always a favorite.

However, if you are looking for something less expensive you can get one of these Dragon touch 4K action cameras (the one pictured) for well under $100.

Sea Salt Hair Spray

You may find that your hair goes a little crazy in the keys! I know mine does. I end up having to wear it curly due to the Florida water and humidity. I love this hair sea salt spray! It has UV protection and will give you a fun beachy look!

General Packing Tips For ANY Destination

Now that I’ve given you a few specific packing tips for the Florida Keys let me give you a few packing tips for ANY destination!

Always, Always Check the Weather Before You Leave

It is best not just to assume that you know what the weather will be.

Always check the weather report in the days before you take a trip. This will give you time to add or remove a jacket, throw in an umbrella, or completely redo what you had planned to bring.

Ok, let’s be honest, for the Florida Keys you can pretty safely assume that the weather will be warm – at least about 95% of the year. There are a few odd days in January or February when it might be cooler – you might need a lightweight jacket.

What you are really looking for when you check the forecast for Florida is storms! Check for tropical storms and hurricanes before you plan your trip.

Are You Packing Light or Bringing Whatever You Want?

Decide how much you want to bring before you start packing.

Some of this may depend on how far you are going and whether or not you are flying or road-tripping. Honestly, If we are taking a road trip I pretty much bring whatever I want.

When I’m flying I pack much lighter. In fact I often pack in a carry on when I’m flying. It’s crazy, but sometimes I bring less on a trip to Europe than I do on a road trip to the next state.

It’s pretty easy to pack lighter when you are going to a warm weather destination like Florida!

What About Luggage?

Do you want something on wheels or do you want to carry your luggage on your back?

I’m a wheels person myself!

I do love the Away Bag Bigger Carry On and I have it in pink! However, it is a little pricy!

The ones pictured are my favorite packing cubes.

You can divide items up anyway you like: by outfits, or tops in one and bottoms in another…pajamas, swimwear, etc.I personally like to set up outfits, but do whatever works for you!

If you are really trying to squeeze a lot into a small suitcase you can use these Compression Cubes by Eagle Creek!

It’s all about the Layers

When you travel you are always going to want to think about packing in layers.

As you put together your outfits always ask yourself questions like: Do I have something I can throw on over this if it gets cool in the evening. Or, will I still like this outfit if it gets hot and I have to take the jacket off?

In this case you are packing for the Florida Keys. You really don’t need to worry too much about layers! Throw in a lightweight sweater in case it is breezy at night or the air-conditioning is too cool in a restaurant or store.

My favorite layer is typically a denim jacket, but denim is a little too heavy for this part of Florida. When packing for the Keys I would bring a lightweight cardigan and/or a lightweight wind breaker.

  • I really love this crocheted cardigan! It is very lightweight and would even be cute as a beach cover up.
  • If you want to bring a lightweight jacket or wind breaker this one is a great value and comes in several different colors!

A Few More Basic Packing Tips

Put the heaviest items towards the wheels of a rolling bag or in the bottom of your backpack. This will make a rolling bag more stable and not as likely to fall over and it will make your backpack more comfortable.

Bring a bag for laundry that will keep the dirty things separated from your clean items. Bring a bag specifically for wet items if you will be doing some swimming or working out!

I love this striped travel wet bag and it comes in a ton of colors and patterns. A wet back is especially important when you are traveling places where you will be in the water a lot.

Choose travel friendly fabrics (meaning things that don’t wrinkle) You don’t want to spend your vacation ironing do you? However, if you do bring something that wrinkles consider using this travel steamer instead of an iron.

Make a Packing List Before you Go on Your Trip

If you start thinking about things to pack in the week before your trip you will have time to grab any extra items that you might need rather than rushing around at the last minute.

Another thing that I find that makes packing easier for me is to…

Pack by Outfit: Know what you will wear before you go!

Pack by outfit! This way you won’t bring individual items that you don’t actually need and won’t wear.

Lay things out before you put them in your bag. This enables you to see what you don’t really need or what you might be missing!

One of the most difficult things for me as a new flight attendant was that I would feel airsick while working.

Honestly, I was shocked to find myself being queasy because I had flown many times before without ever having motion sickness.

The senior flight attendants assured me that this was normal and common for new flight attendants and that my body would eventually adjust.

They were right, but I assure you that during my first few months as a flight attendant I learned a lot about how to avoid getting airsick!

a group of three young women. They are smiling. Their hair is pulled up into buns on their head and they are dressed in navy blue flight attendant jackets with scarves on their necks.

First of All, What Causes Airsicknesses

Basically motion sickness (called airsickness when you are on a plane) is a problem caused by conflicting signals between your brain, your inner ear, and your senses.

Your body and your inner ear are detecting movement that your eyes aren’t registering. These mixed signals confuse your brain and can cause you to feel sick.

What Are the Symptoms of Airsickness?

If you don’t know the symptoms of airsickness consider yourself lucky! Nausea, cold sweats, dizziness, turning pale, fatigue…at its very worse airsickness can cause you to throw up.

By the way…if you start to feel nauseated do your flight attendant a favor and make sure you have your airsick bag ready to go.

It should be in the seat pocket in front of you! If not, feel free to ask for one!

Please.

Best Ways to Avoid Getting Airsick

So, now that you know what airsickness is and how it makes you feel…here are some of my best tips for how to NOT to get motion sick when flying.

Some of these tips will also you feel better if despite your best efforts you DO start to feel airsick.

Choose your seat carefully

If you are prone to motion sickness this is a very important tip.

I was so surprised as a new flight attendant to discover just how much smoother the ride is near the front of the plane than it is in the back.

I have been on flights where the attendants in the back of the plane could barely complete the service due to turbulence while those in the front were blissfully unaware.

Of course, not all of us can enjoy flying WAY in the front of the plane in first class, but even if you are flying coach I suggest that you try to get a seat over or in front of the wing.

It really makes a difference in the amount of movement you will feel!

Don’t Eat Too Much or Too Little Before Your Flight

Many people like to take an early morning flight not only because they are usually cheaper, but also because early flights are not as likely to be running late.

However, I have seen many passengers start to feel sick on these flights because they have gotten up before dawn and rushed around to get to the airport in time without eating breakfast.

It is a BAD idea to fly on an empty stomach. I speak from experience here!!!

Try to have something light to eat before you get on the plane even if it is just a bagel or a piece of toast.

You can even pack a snack the night before to bring with you on your early morning flight.

On the other side of the spectrum are the red eye or late night flights when people may have had too much to eat before boarding. This can cause you to feel sick if you encounter any turbulence.

Basically, just eat a light meal before you fly and don’t eat anything that has potential to upset your stomach.

Don’t Drink Alcohol and Do Stay Hydrated

If you tend to get airsick then avoid drinking alcohol before or during air travel.

Drinking alcohol tends to make airsickness worse. In part because it can increase dizziness and also because it can cause dehydration which ALSO can make your airsickness worse.

So stay hydrated and don’t drink alcohol if you tend to get sick while flying.

Dress in Layers So That You Can Regulate Your Body Temperature

a man on an airplane turning on the air vent. A tip for how to avoid airsickness is to use the air vent

Getting too warm on a flight might not cause airsickness, but it can definitely exacerbate it!

Dress in layers so that you can remove some to keep yourself from getting too warm on a flight.

Use Your Fresh Air Vent

Having some fresh air blowing on you can help to prevent you from becoming airsick so be sure and use your air vent!

As an added bonus Business Insider says that using the air vent is a healthy choice on a plane.

Avoid Reading a Book or Looking at Screens

When you read or look at screens your visual field stays still, however your body and inner ear are aware of the motion of the plane which confuses your brain.

Whoops. There goes that disconnect that will make you feel sick.

It is better to be bored than sick!

Try to Sleep

I know that sleep is hard to come by on a plane under the best of circumstances. However, one of the side effects of motion sickness can be tiredness so perhaps you will be able to nap that terrible feeling away.

It helps to bring a few things to make yourself more comfortable. An eye mask and a neck travel pillow are must haves.

If You Are Seated By the Window Try Looking Out at the Horizon

Finding the horizon can be difficult on a plane, but if you do happen to be seated near a window you can try opening your shade and looking out. This can help to coordinate and stabilize the eyes and the inner ear.

interior of an airplane. You can see a row of seats and there is a sunset outside of the airplane window. One tip for how to prevent airsickness is to look at the horizon

Ginger or Peppermint

It might sound like an old wives tale, but some studies show that ginger really does help to alleviate nausea.

a hand holding a drink in front of an airplane window

I honestly found ginger to work well for me when I was struggling with airsickness, maybe it will for you, too!

When you are flying you can try sipping on ginger ale.

In fact, you might even want to pick up a can right after you get through security so that you can sip before the cart service even begins.

If you prefer not to drink ginger ale try these ginger drops. I used these because obviously I couldn’t drink ginger ale while I was working.

Do note that these drops are strong and spicy! However, I really found them to be helpful.

Some people swear by peppermint to ease their airsickness. It never did much for me, but your mileage might vary. it wouldn’t hurt to throw some peppermints in your carryon bag!

Try Acupressure

There is a pressure point on your wrist, called the PC6, that is known to help some people with their motion sickness. Check this post here to see how to find this pressure point.

You can even try wearing a seasick wristband when you fly.

Talk to Your Doctor About Medication

If you find that you’ve tried everything and simply can’t fly without getting airsick then talk to your doctor before your next trip about some of the medications that are available.

Dramamine is available over the counter but, of course, you will want to speak to your doctor before you try anything new.

I hope that these tips for how to avoid getting airsick help you on your next flight!

Wondering what to wear in Texas?

My husband and I recently took a little vacation to the Texas Hill Country.

Although I have spent a lot of time in Dallas and Houston over the years, the hill country was new to me and I HIGHLY recommend it! There was so much beauty and charm, great food, and everyone we met was so nice and friendly.

I had so much fun on this little Texas weekend get-away.

Here are some ideas for what to wear in Texas as well as some packing tips for a Texas vacation!

cute denim dress with tennis shoes, ideas for what to wear in Texas. What to pack for Texas.

Prepare for Texas Weather

Let’s talk about the weather in Texas! Mostly…it’s hot, but not always!

Of course, you always want to check the weather before you travel. Obviously, this will make a huge difference in what you need to pack for your Texas vacation.

Here is the type of weather that you can “generally” expect in Texas.

  • June through August: It’ll be warm, hot, and sometimes scorching. It will also be muggy most of the time across the state. Summers sometimes come with afternoon showers that don’t do a lot to cool things down.
  • September – November: Don’t expect cool temperatures to have arrived by September in Texas. Most of the time September will still feel like summer. The temperatures will finally start to cool off a little in October and November, but it should still be warm enough for any number of outdoor activities.
  • December – February: January is typically the coldest month of the year. Winters are interesting because temperatures can vary tremendously. You will have a really cold day with freezing temperatures followed by a gorgeous sunshiny 65 degrees. There can even be freak ice storms. However Texas normally has cool but mild winters.
  • March – May: Spring is a gorgeous time to visit Texas. The wildflowers are blooming and the temperatures are warming up. It can still be a little cool in March, but will definitely be warming by April, and will be swimming hole weather by May!

What is the General Texas Style?

So, what should you wear in Texas, what is the Texas style, and what do Texans wear?

Want to know the good news about packing for a Texas vacation? Those clothes that you sometimes feel are a bit too “extra?” They won’t be in “most” parts of Texas!

Hats and boots and color and bling and fun…those are all acceptable in this larger than life state. It was a dream come true for me!

After all, I grew up in the neighboring state of Arkansas with a grandmother (hi, mawmaw!) who always told me, “Emily, there’s no such thing as too much bling” and I assure you that I took her words to heart.

Texans are mostly casual dressers, however people will still look pulled together.

Think about dressing in what I would call “cute casual” for the smaller towns and more rural areas.

This will also apply for most of the bigger cities unless you will be going out to some shows or fine dining.

Here is what I’ve seen in the bigger cities:

  • Dallas: Dallas is a bit of a world all its own. Definitely dress more like a city slicker than a country mouse. Dallas is dressier than most other cities in Texas. You may notice that brands kind of a big deal in Dallas – but I’m not a “brand” girl so I just don’t worry about that! The look here tends to be sleeker than most of the rest of Texas.
  • Fort Worth: Dallas and Fort Worth may be next door neighbors but they have a completely different vibe. Fort Worth is definitely more “western” then Dallas. Think big hair and boots and bling.
  • Austin: Hippy chic meets cool western. Austin is very casual. Think denim and band tees and flowy dresses.
  • Houston: Houston has it all. This HUGE city is very diverse and fun. Styles can change from neighborhood to neighborhood so you will be fine in almost anything. It’s pretty casual most of the time although people will dress up a bit to go out at night.

What to Wear in Texas?

Our visit to Texas was in April and the weather was already quite warm while we were there. Some days it was in the 90’s. I know, in APRIL!

It was already swimming (or swimming hole) weather!

If you are going anytime but winter you will want to prepare for warm weather. If you are going in the winter definitely bring sweaters and a jacket but you probably won’t need anything TOO heavy.

NOTE: People in the south, including Texas, like their air-conditioning y’all. So even in the summer you might want to throw a cardigan or some layers in your bag.

In addition to swimming there are lots of other outdoor activities in Texas. You will want to be prepared for being outdoors with athletic wear. If you will be hiking bring sturdy shoes for the rough terrain.

If you are planning to go to some of the swimming holes you will definitely want to bring some water shoes or sandals.

A comfortable flow-y dress or two is also a great addition to your Texas vacation packing list especially if you are going to search for wildflowers in the spring!

If you are going to be in the bigger cities and going to nice restaurants bring something a little dressier.

Some Ideas for What to Wear in Texas

Boots

Yes, people in Texas definitely wear boots. You can go for some fashion-y boots or wear real cowboy boots.

I wore this pair cute white boots while we were there just for fun.

If you think you will be doing any horseback riding while you in the state then you might want to splurge on the real thing like these Justin boots or this pretty Ariat Brand boot.

Water Shoes

There are some gorgeous swimming holes in Texas! Visiting some of these was one of my favorite things we did on our trip!

You will definitely want a good pair of water shoes for the walk to the springs and to stand of the rocky bottoms of the creeks and rivers.

I have been a Chaco fan for years! I wear this sandal style chaco and found it to be the perfect shoe for swimming. You will also see people wearing them out and about.

If you prefer a closed water shoe then I recommend this women’s water and walking shoe. Its cute and comes in a lot of colors and would also work perfectly for walking around town!

Hats

You will need a hat, and no, It does not have to be a cowboy hat! I swear people wear cowboy hats more in Nashville than they do in Texas.

However, you will probably want something on your head to protect you from the sun.

I happen to love hats! A cute straw hat is one of the best things to wear in the summer. This straw hat is adorable and is foldable for travel! Here is another straw hat that has the shape of a cowboy hat that might be fun to wear in Texas.

You might also want to bring a baseball cap for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Swimsuits

If you are going to Texas in the summer you will definitely want to bring something to swim in. I’m kind of ridiculous when it comes to swimsuits so I brought three!

For the swimming holes you might want to bring something with a bit of extra coverage for scrambling up and down rocks.

This is a two piece that is super sporty that would be perfect for more rustic swimming.

If you are just going to be lounging by the hotel pool in the city then you can wear something more cutesy!

For girls who like a high waisted bikini bottom I think that this retro suit is ADORABLE.

Wanting to get a great tan in the hot Texas sun wearing a true bikinig?

I think that this cute suit is perfect. It also comes in a bunch of patterns and colors.

Swimsuit Coverups

No matter how hot Texas is, it is not like being in the islands. They will expect you to coverup before going in stores or restaurants.

Here are some swimsuit coverups that I love.

Layers

Even in the summer you might want to throw a layering piece in your suitcase. A cardigan is always a perfect choice.

I love this waffle knit cardigan. It would be so easy to throw on even over shorts and a T-shirt.

If you aren’t a fan of waffle knit, check out this great basic cardigan which would be a perfect year-round staple.

I also think that this cute crochet cardigan is perfect as a summer layering piece. It is lightweight, with 3/4 sleeves, and it comes in several colors!

Sportswear

If you plan to do some hiking on your trip to Texas you will definitely want to have the right kind of clothing. The terrain can be pretty rough and the plantlife tends to be spiky.

I suggest something lightweight and quick dry for summer like these water resistant pants.

Because the weather can be so hot you might want to consider bringing some that zip off into shorts like this convertible style.

You can also just wear a pair of leggings or quick dry shorts for some of your activities. This super simple pair of quick dry shorts would be perfect for a lot of sporty activities.

Shorts

Shorts are definitely acceptable in Texas and almost a necessity in the hot summers. My favorites are denim shorts because they are so versatile.

They can be completely casual if you wear a distressed pair with a Tee shirt and tennies. Or even dressed up a little bit with a less distressed or darker denim, cute top and wedge sandals.

Denim shorts are just cute and a southern summertime staple!

Miscellaneous Items to Pack for Texas

  • People who haven’t lived in the south have a hard time understanding just how hot he can be down here. Texas is hot, y’all! These cooling towels are perfect for after an outdoor activity. They will help you to feel so much better after hiking or biking or even just taking a walk in the Texas heat.
  • Weather in Texas can be unpredictable and they can have some gully washers. Be prepared with a good travel umbrella!
  • You will definitely want to stay hydrated in the Texas heat! Plan to carry a water bottle with you for sightseeing and outdoor activities! I still carry a Nalgene water bottle especially for hiking!

General Packing Tips For ANY Destination

Here are a few packing tips for ANY destination!

You might also be interested in:

Always, Always Check the Weather Before You Leave

It is best not just to assume that you know what the weather will be. Always check the weather report in the days before you take a trip.

This will give you time to add or remove a jacket, throw in an umbrella, or completely redo what you had planned to bring.

I do love the Away Bag Bigger Carry On and it is what I have, but it is a little pricy!

If you are looking for a carry on that is high quality but a little less expensive check out the Amazon Basics Carry On. It is well under $100 and gets great reviews!

It’s all About the Layers

When you travel you are always going to want to think about packing in layers. You know that you will need layers if you are traveling to Texas in the winter.

However, you will still need them in the summer. As I mentioned above, Texans LOVE their air-conditioning.

As you put together your outfits always ask yourself questions like: Do I have something I can throw on over this if it gets cool in the evening. Or, will I still like this outfit if it gets hot and I have to take the jacket off?

I’ve already mentioned some great cardigans for layering, but my all-time favorite layer? Always a denim jacket! I like mine a little oversized and kind of basic like this cute denim jacket on Amazon.

Layers, y’all. Super important.

A Few More Basic Packing Tips

  • Put the heaviest items towards the wheels or in the bottom of the bag!
  • Bring a bag for dirty laundry to keep the dirty things separated from your clean items. If you are planning to be swimming or working out then you may want a waterproof wet bag. This one comes in a ton of colors and patterns.
  • Pack by outfit! This way you won’t bring individual items that you don’t actually need and won’t wear.
  • Lay things out a few days you put them in your bag. This enables you to see what you don’t really need or what you might be missing!

Hope that gives you some ideas of what to pack and what to wear on a trip to Texas! Thanks so much for stopping by!
